Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Polynesian *qalelo (compare Hawaiian alelo, Rapa Nui arero),[1] from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *deləq (compare Kiput deleiʔ), doublet of Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *dilaq (compare Tagalog dila, Malay lidah).
